Frequently Asked
Shoulder Pain Physio, Answered
Where can I get physiotherapy for shoulder pain in Richmond, BC?
Fittopia Fitness Center at 7951 Alderbridge Way Unit 155 has an in-house physiotherapist, Winston Yeung, who treats the full spectrum of shoulder conditions. Direct billing to most extended health plans. The Fittopia advantage: rehab and strength training coordinate on the same floor, which matters a lot for shoulder work where return to overhead lifting or sport is a common goal.
How long does frozen shoulder take to resolve with physio?
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) typically progresses through three phases over 12 to 24 months total: a painful freezing phase (2 to 9 months), a stiff frozen phase (4 to 12 months), and a thawing phase (6 to 24 months). Physiotherapy does not dramatically shorten the total course but significantly reduces pain and preserves function throughout. Hands-on treatment, graded range-of-motion work, and strength progression all help. Early intervention produces the best outcomes.
Can physio fix a rotator cuff tear?
Many rotator cuff tears, especially smaller and less severe tears in non-dominant shoulders, respond very well to conservative physiotherapy. Full-thickness tears in active adults often need surgical repair, with physio both pre-op and post-op. Recent research shows physio is a legitimate first-line treatment for most rotator cuff injuries, with surgery reserved for cases that do not respond or for specific clinical presentations. Winston Yeung will assess and coordinate with a sport-med physician if surgery may be indicated.
What causes shoulder impingement and how is it treated?
Shoulder impingement is when the rotator cuff tendons get pinched under the acromion during overhead movement. Common causes include poor scapular control, weak rotator cuff, poor posture, and repetitive overhead work or sport. Treatment is typically progressive strength work (rotator cuff and scapular stabilisers), manual therapy, postural education, and temporary load modification. Most cases resolve within 6 to 12 weeks of consistent rehab.
Can I keep lifting with shoulder pain?
Usually yes, with exercise modifications. The goal is to train in ranges and with loads that do not aggravate, while progressively rebuilding capacity in the painful ranges. Common modifications: swap overhead pressing for landmine press, swap bench press for floor press, reduce load on painful exercises, and add rotator cuff and scapular strengthening work. Coordinating physio and personal training on the same floor at Fittopia makes this easy.
Does Winston Yeung direct-bill for shoulder physio?
Yes, for most extended health insurance providers. He does not accept ICBC or WorkSafe BC claims. Bring your benefits card to your first appointment.
What should I expect at a first shoulder physio appointment?
A detailed history (when it started, what aggravates it, sport and training history), a physical assessment (range of motion, strength testing, special tests for rotator cuff, labrum, AC joint), an explanation of what Winston thinks is going on, a treatment plan with expected timeline, typically some hands-on treatment, and exercises to start on. 60 minutes.
