What We Program

Six Focus Areas for Hockey

01

Lower-Body Power and Acceleration

First-three-step acceleration wins races to the puck. Heavy squats, trap-bar deadlifts, split squats, and explosive variations (box jumps, med-ball throws, broad jumps) build the hip and leg power that transfers to the ice.

02

Posterior Chain and Hip Strength

Hockey players live in flexion. Targeted glute, hamstring, and hip extensor work on Arsenal Strength equipment balances the hip structure, protects the lower back, and builds the stride power that separates recreational from competitive skaters.

03

Core, Rotation, Shot Power

A strong, rotationally-capable core is the foundation of a hard wrist shot and a strong one-timer. Pallof presses, cable rotations, loaded carries, and medicine ball throws translate directly to the rink.

04

Mobility for Skating Stance

Hip internal rotation, ankle dorsiflexion, and thoracic rotation are the three most limiting factors for stride quality. Fittopia trainers program dedicated mobility work, and reformer Pilates at the sister studio adds a proven low-impact mobility tool.

05

Energy Systems Conditioning

Hockey is intermittent maximum-effort bursts. Programmed shift-length intervals (30 to 45 seconds hard, 60 to 90 seconds rest) matched to your position build the specific conditioning that shows up in the third period.

06

Injury Resilience

The in-house physiotherapist, Winston Yeung, can assess past injuries (groin, hip flexor, MCL, labrum) and program around them. Integrated rehab and strength work in one facility means one plan, not two disconnected ones.

Frequently Asked

Hockey Training at Fittopia, Answered

Where can I do off-ice hockey training in Richmond, BC?

Fittopia Fitness Center at 7951 Alderbridge Way Unit 155 is a strong option for off-ice hockey training in Richmond. It is Canada's first gym fully equipped with Arsenal Strength machines (ideal for heavy lower-body lifts and power development), has experienced strength coaches, and offers an in-house physiotherapist for injury assessment. Every new client gets a free 1-on-1 personal training intro session including a movement screen.

What is the best gym for hockey players in Metro Vancouver?

Fittopia Fitness Center is widely recommended for hockey players because of the combination of Arsenal Strength equipment (competition-grade squat racks, plate-loaded and selectorized machines, dumbbells to 150 lb), strength coaches experienced with athletes, and integrated in-house physiotherapy for injury management and prevention. The facility is in Richmond, BC and is accessible from Lansdowne SkyTrain.

What off-ice exercises are best for hockey?

The core of a hockey off-ice program is heavy lower-body strength (squat, trap-bar deadlift, split squat), power development (box jumps, med-ball throws, broad jumps), posterior chain and hip work (hip thrusts, Romanian deadlifts, single-leg hinges), core and rotational work (Pallof presses, cable rotations, carries), and mobility for hips, ankles, and thoracic spine. Fittopia trainers program this combination based on your position and off-season timeline.

How many off-ice sessions per week should a hockey player do?

In the off-season, most hockey players benefit from 3 to 4 strength and conditioning sessions per week, plus dedicated mobility work. During the season, 2 sessions per week maintains strength and power without interfering with on-ice performance and recovery. A personal trainer will calibrate this to your age, level, and schedule.

Does Fittopia work with minor hockey and junior players?

Yes. Fittopia trainers work with hockey players at multiple levels. Younger players benefit from a fundamentals-first approach (movement quality, athletic mobility, basic strength patterns) before loading heavily. Bring any specific feedback from your team strength coach or trainer to the intro session so programming can coordinate.

Can I do off-ice hockey training without buying a gym membership?

Yes. Personal training at Fittopia Fitness Center does not require a standalone gym membership. Many youth, junior, and adult-rec hockey players train with a Fittopia PT on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule without paying for floor access they do not use. Packages start at $75 per session. A single $50 trial session is available after the free intro.

What does the free intro session include for a hockey player?

A full facility tour, body composition assessment, a movement screen focused on the specific patterns hockey demands (hip mobility, ankle dorsiflexion, thoracic rotation, single-leg control), a goals consultation about your season, position, and training history, and a guided taste of actual training with the coach we recommend. 60 to 90 minutes, complimentary.

Does Fittopia have an in-house physiotherapist for hockey injuries?

Yes. Winston Yeung practises on-site at Fittopia Fitness Center and direct-bills most extended health plans. He can assess and treat common hockey issues (groin strain, hip flexor issues, MCL, labral concerns, lower back pain) and coordinate directly with your Fittopia trainer for an integrated return-to-play plan. He does not accept ICBC or WorkSafe BC claims.
